They were sloppy words, but I meant them. I’d only chosen to sleep with Killian because he’d been there, and I’d wanted release. That had been my first mistake. Because I’d ignored other warnings, like his tendency to keep my father aware of my every move. When Adrian the blood king, goes to honor the surrender of the house of Lara, he asks for princess Isolde’s hand in marriage in return – a young maiden who had enticed him in the woods. As he’d expected King Henri puts up a fight for his daughter, but eventually he agrees because in truth, the house of Lara has no other option except war. Commander Killian

ISOLDE WAS GREAT and I thought she was written as a strong and interesting morally-grey character. You could tell from her mannerisms and the way she spoke that she was actually raised to lead and be a queen. Isolde has mixed reactions as someone who’s supposed to be the enemy eventually turns out to be a helper, and also an aphrodisiac who’s making her feel lustful, warm, and wet in unholy places. I think that you have to really be very mindful about how you use sex in your plot. It’s part of the character arc of this person. And Isolde went from just kind of exploring and having fun and whatever to being with one person. And she maybe teases him at first but she learns through all of this what kind of relationship she actually wants to have.”

Adrian and his vampires did not tell everything to Isolde because she made it no secret that she still considered them to be her enemies and didn’t trust them, so of course, they wouldn’t trust her with their secrets and battle plans, yet Isolde was hurt every single time she learned that they didn’t share something with her. I apologize in advance for the length of this review. I had a lot to say about Isolde and this “romance” between her and Adrian…

From fan-favorite Scarlett St. Clair, the bestselling author of the Hades & Persephone series, comes a new fantasy filled with danger, darkness, and insatiable romance. Scarlett St. Clair’s new novel, King of Battle and Blood, is a vampire tale that tries to straddle both of these worlds at once, mixing all the myth-making and bloody conflict of epic fantasy with the entertaining sexiness of a dark and dangerous romance. The result is something that feels surprisingly fresh: Fantasy aimed squarely and unashamedly at female readers, and stories that are as concerned with slow-burn romance and steamy sex as they are building a larger internal mythology. Romance can be literary and a romance plot can be literary. [People say] that romance doesn’t have a plot, right? No! Romance has a plot,” she says. “A plot is just actions. Romance just has a different set of actions. It’s the actions you take falling in love.”If I were to compare it to her Hades & Persephone books, King of Battle and Blood was written competently. I liked that it was such a fast-paced and easy reading. Clair came out with a political conflict in the worldbuilding which made it all enthralling. Bonus point — because as far as I am not concerned, there were no typing/spelling/grammar errors like how it used to be so apparent in her previous books. I'm not a grammar nazi, I just expected better from an author who is publishing their books that I paid for it. Everything is finally falling into place. First off. I wanted to state that Scarlett St. Clair’s book, “King of Battle and Blood” is fantastic. Because of my work schedule, I have to use an audio-book to listen to the story. Anyway, here are my pros and cons of this book. There were a lot of elements to this story that just didn't make sense or required more explanation. Here are a few major ones: I knew then who I truly was. Who I had always been. Yesenia of Aroth. I was Yesenia of Aroth—not now, not in this body, but I had been her in another life, in Adrian’s life.” Very one dimensional and boring. Again, I felt like the author was inspired by FBAA and based her characters off Casteel and Poppy. And although I now hate that series, I have to say that Jennifer Armentrout did a better job with the characters. Adrian’s whole personality trait in here is that he’s supposedly violent and that he loves his wife. I finished this whole book and I still know absolutely nothing about him as an individual character...

I have to say, after reading ATOD from the 3rd person perspective and this book from the 1st person, I think SSC does much better writing in 1st person. While this is not something that will matter to some people, it made a big difference to me because this book is such an improvement from ATOD. Some of the sentences in this book really wowed me. Like "I met him beneath jasmine and kissed him under stars, and we made love in the dark, and that love ended in fire and damned the world" just made me speechless because I think this might be the best sentence in the whole book for me. Romance novels are often predictable, which often makes them enjoyable and fun to read. This book made me cringe, it made me guffaw, and I slammed it closed multiple times in protest. I would never burn a book, but I might have considered it for a hot second. I’m proud of myself for finishing it. In an attempt to get away from all the frustration, Isolde ran from commander Killian but met a strange on her way to the castle. As a seasoned fighter, she defeated the filthy creature of course, suffering just a few scratches that were healed by a strange vampire she encountered in the woods – the same people she considered her enemies. The man dropped his sword, as if he no longer perceived me as a threat, which made me want to be a threat, except that I dropped my arm too, my fingers loose around the hilt. I tried to tighten my hold but couldn’t. He knew there was no need in fighting because they would be demolished if they tried, so he sought a more peaceful approach to save his people – to surrender.

Not to worry, my sweet. I will not feed from you. Not until you ask.” “I will never ask.” The Blood King’s lips twitched, and when he spoke, his voice was reverent. “You will. You will beg for it.”

St. Clair notes that her new series will be very different than her previous work, and she’s excited to see where the story goes. “The characters of King of Battle and Blood just erupted one day in my head and never stopped talking. That’s how I knew it had to be my next series. Isolde and Adrian are fierce and angry and passionate. Their world is dark, dangerous, and witchy. Every step with them has been a type of magic and I cannot wait to introduce my readers—and new ones—to this world.” It’s about a princess named Isolde who, to save her kingdom, will marry its greatest enemy, a king named Adrian—who also happens to be the first vampire born of this world. While a lot steamier than the Shadow and Bone trilogy, KING OF BATTLE AND BLOOD explores the question of…what if Alina chose the Darkling instead? I have to admit…I’m very interested in those dynamics and the (usually) female’s choice to forego world domination…so here we are! USA Today Bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair is a citizen of the Muscogee Nation and the author of the HADES X PERSEPHONE SAGA, the HADES SAGA, KING OF BATTLE & BLOOD, and WHEN STARS COME OUT. Please don't talk about character development because it's hardly so till the end and I am tired of excusing asshole people by discarding it as "their personality and that people are different." Because oh yeah? That still doesn't give you the license to be rude.King of Battle and Blood by Scarlett St. Clair is about a young, cranky, and defiant woman named Isolde who lives in a castle where she is pampered by her maid and her father. Isolde’s father has recently surrendered the Kingdom to the Blood King to avoid a devastating war. Far too many fantasy series tend to treat women as supporting figures: Love interests, damsels to be rescued, victims of violence, or passive figures who must spend their lives reacting to the action happening around them. But St. Clair had a very particular vision for the sort of heroine she wanted King of Battle and Blood’s Isolde to be—and it wasn’t any of those things. What is it you want from me?” he asked; his voice was low, a purr that coaxed a shiver from the depths of my stomach.
